HydRegen appoint Giovanni Davide Barone as a specialist in Molecular Biology

HydRegen, the revolutionary bioscience company, is proud to announce the appointment of Giovanni Davide Barone as Molecular Biology Specialist, to expand their capabilities in metal-containing enzyme production and increase manufacturing readiness of their lead product. Giovanni brings a deep understanding of industrial biotechnology and biocatalysis from his extensive research of molecular biology and metabolic engineering.

This role gives me an opportunity to apply all the knowledge and experience I have gained to deliver material results and contribute to the growth and development of the company.

Giovanni is passionate about invoking a positive change towards a more sustainable future and believes the application of biological systems in chemical manufacturing will play an important part, with HydRegen's biocatalytic hydrogenation platform as a key part of the toolkit. Following his Master of Science Degree in Industrial Biotechnology, Giovanni went on to achieve a double degree PhD (Doctor rerum naturalium (Austria) and Doutor em Biologia (Portugal)) with his thesis on reaction engineering of cyanobacterial biotransformations. Having gained more than 5 years of industry experience as early-stage Researcher with several European Universities and Validogen GmbH, Giovanni has a deep understanding of molecular biotechnology and recombinant protein production.

HydRegen is providing bio-based manufacturing technologies that are cleaner, safer and more efficient than current chemical manufacturing processes. With a focus on the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical sectors, HydRegen’s vision is to replace finite resources for hydrogenation reactions, such as metals, with environmentally and economically friendly alternatives that will enable more sustainable chemical manufacturing and help reduce the industry’s carbon footprint.

Since spinning out from the University of Oxford in 2021, HydRegen has focused on implementation of its new strategies to reduce the environmental impact of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing. As part of its development, HydRegen works in collaboration with industry leading companies to implement greener and less wasteful manufacturing processes, addressing the unmet needs of the chemical sector.

Dr Holly Reeve, CEO at HydRegen said:

“We are really pleased to have Giovanni join the team at HydRegen. His profound knowledge of molecular biology and industrial biotechnology will bring new insights to the development of our first product, helping us advance towards commercialisation. Each industry faces its own set of issues and challenges that require specialist research and development to enable the transition to a low-carbon economy. Giovanni’s experience and passion will help us speed up manufacturing readiness of our technologies, thus allowing more clients to reach their sustainability goals.”

Dr Giovanni Davide Barone, Molecular Biology Specialist at HydRegen comments:

“We are constantly being exposed to the impacts of climate change around the world and yet there is little movement to adapt the way we live and work to be more sustainable. HydRegen is on a mission to create real change with its sustainable solutions for chemical manufacturing and I am very excited to be part of such a motivated team leading the industry to successfully achieve its net-zero goals. This role gives me an opportunity to apply all the knowledge and experience I have gained to deliver material results and contribute to the growth and development of the company.”
