HydRegen appoint Piera De Santis as a Scientist specialising in Molecular Biology

HydRegen, the revolutionary bioscience company, is pleased to announce the appointment of Piera De Santis as a Scientist of Molecular Biology. Following more than 3 years studying for her double doctorate degree in biological and chemical engineering, and organic chemistry, Piera has extensive experience in bioprocess engineering, enzyme manipulation, organic chemistry and analytical analysis.

“I hope to combine my skills in chemistry and biology and utilise my experience of biocatalysis and biotechnology to help the team progress in their development of real-world solutions to sustainable chemical manufacturing.” - Piera

As part of her PhD studies at Aarhus University and Graz University, Piera was a member of the PhotoBioCat Project‑Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and worked in Professor Selin Kara’s Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing Group as well as in Professor Wolfgang Kroutil’s group. Both projects focused on the values promoted by ‘green chemistry', particularly on its final commitment to boost the transition from the traditional chemical industry to an eco-friendlier institution.

It was whilst studying for her Master’s degree in Chemical Sciences that Piera discovered her passion for green technologies and a determination to be a part of the transition to a greener future through sustainable chemistry. While a background in academia builds a strong foundation in research and problem solving, Piera believes that by moving into an industry position you can conduct research in a way that has a real impact on society. Being a part of research that has purpose is what has led her to join HydRegen.

HydRegen is developing new strategies to reduce the environmental impact of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing. Its bio-based manufacturing technologies are cleaner, safer and more efficient than current processes, enabling more sustainable chemical manufacturing. With a focus on the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical sectors, HydRegen’s vision is to replace finite resources for hydrogenation reactions, such as metals, with environmentally and economically friendly alternatives.

Dr Holly Reeve, CEO at HydRegen said: “We are excited to have Piera join the HydRegen team and help advance our development of sustainable solutions to the real problems in chemical manufacturing. Her extensive research and experience in enzyme manipulation and biotransformations brings a new understanding and skillset to our diverse team of expert scientists. Piera’s passion to be a part of the green transition is something that resonates with our own values and drives us forward in our development of commercially viable products and solutions.”

Piera De Santis, Scientist of Molecular Biology at HydRegen comments: “On being introduced to HydRegen I was instantly struck by their mission and the positive impact this could have on the environment for future generations. Having been in academia for more than 10 years, I was keen to gain an understanding of how academic research can overlap and interact with the industry to drive commercialisation of products and processes that will drive the transition to green chemistry. I hope to combine my skills in chemistry and biology and utilise my experience of biocatalysis and biotechnology to help the team progress in their development of real-world solutions to sustainable chemical manufacturing.”
